It's part of the act. Yes, he can talk. No, he doesn't talk during Penn Jillette and William Teller interviews.

From Wikipedia:

"Teller does not speak while performing although there are occasional exceptions, usually when the audience is not aware of it. For example, he did the voice of "Mofo the psychic gorilla" in their early Broadway show with the help of a radio mike cupped in his hand. Teller's trademark silence originated during his youth, when he earned a living performing magic at college fraternity parties. He found that if he maintained silence throughout his act, spectators stopped heckling him and focused more on his performance."

No, he cannot talk. He used to work in the meatpacking district in New York City as a teenager, and lost his tongue in an unfortunate slicing machine accident.

He can only make groans and grunts and refuses to learn sign language. Penn actually spoke Teller's proposal to his now wife, since Teller was unable to do it himself. To this day, Penn does all the talking for the two of them.

Yes, he can talk, and yes, it's just part of the act. But I think Penn talks enough for the both of them, lol!

I saw a show once, he was back-lit to show only a silhouette (like a protected witness on the news) and he talked in that segment.

It's just one of the quirks that makes their act memorable!

:D

I saw a documentary about magic on TV where Teller provided some off-camera narration but whenever he was on camera he kept silent.

He actually can, but for the stage bit, he doesn't. There was a special on magic, and Teller is very articulate

It's a total act. He named his child Moxie Crimefighter, he's an idiot.
