I took biology a year ago, so my memory might not be that fresh.

If the cell is small, the surface area to volume ratio is larger, therefore diffusion is faster, and vice versa.

Cell size = small
Diffusion rate = faster

Cell size = large
Diffusion rate = slower

That is why cells have to be small or else they cannot take in oxygen and nutritient fast enough to support themselves.
