when they are dirty or lose their shape, if your worried about wearing out your favorite jeans (we all have favorites) if their still clean you can reshape them by spraying them with water and throwing them in the dryer with a fabric softener sheet for about 10 min.

I know it sounds gross, but not very often - as least as possible to maintain the colour and feel.
What I do is after wearing my jeans, I leave them to air for a few hours in a breezy spot (perhaps outside) so that any moisture dries before I put them away. Wash them when they get stained or smelly!
Actually I just washed all my jeans today. I turned them all inside-out and reduced the amount of detergent by half. I washed them in cold water on the gentle cycle. I then hung them outside to dry (still inside out).

Depends on how dirty they are. Take for example, you wore a just-washed jean to take out the trash (30secs), then hang it up and don't wash it yet. However if you're playing with your dog, sitting on the grass etc, you might have to wash it sooner than if you're wearing your jean and sitting down in front of the computer. Use your judgement. If you think if should be washed, wash it.

if the jean's are new they need to be washed by themselves because the color can fade onto other clothes but they aren't new you don't want to wash them to often because they wear out quicker.

I wash mine after each wear because it seems they wear out faster if not. They seem to loose their shape and good fit when they arent' freshly washed and ironed....that's just my opinion.
