I work for my cousin in a small (25-30 employees) pest control firm. I find that a lot of ppl in general don't trust us, think we're lying, think we don't spray when we say we do, all kinds of things. I'm not talking about our customers, they know we do right by them. I'm speaking of the reputation pest control has in general not our company specifically. when ppl first call us, that is their attitude, that they will not be treated fairly. my dad was in this business and taught my cousin and i , we want to do right. What can we do to redreate this misconception and do you think that your pest control company takes care of you?

I too work for a small pest control company. I'm a 3rd generation pest control company owner. I feel that by ensuring our customers we are licensed and bonded, they get a special feeling like we care for them. Which is absolutely true.

I feel that people just get a bad vibe off of pest control workers because the typical american that buys pest control are white colar workers. And now for a short while they have to trust someone that is not in an armani suite and tie.

I also like to make it a rule that we don't enter into the house without having a person there with us. GPS is also another way of letting people know that you were at their homes.

If you take care of your customers they will take care of you.

I have family and friends that have worked in pest control over the last 10 years or more. They all admit that the companies they worked for ask them to dilute the solutions of the pesticides apply so that they have to revisit the location and cost the home owner more money.
Through my friends an family sharing this with me over the years I have always done my own pest control. Over the years of price checking and getting the best deal I have found my favorite company to support my DIY habits or Do It Yourself habits with fast free shipping, even educational videos to show me how, and all of the products I could ever dream of needed to protect my home from any animal intruder.
They are called www.domyownpestcontrol.com
They are the best I have seen in the last 10 years an I am a frequent customer. They make sure I don't get the run around and over charged by pest control companies and operators!
Thank you Domyownpestcontrol
They are worth checking out!

The reason people don't trust pest control people is because there are a lot of untrustworthy pest people. You may be in the minority. I've found there to be a lot of people who spray first whether there needs to be any spraying or not. People want alternatives and if you can give them non-toxic alternatives, you are going to be trusted more. I automatically think (whether this is right or wrong...) that okay, this person is making money on spraying, so they are going to push me to do that without looking at alternatives. You are also selling them poison, so I think it is natural not to want that, and to distrust someone selling it.

My suggestion, give people explanations of what you are doing and WHY you need to spray. Give alternatives (use Integrated Pest Management which says spraying should be the LAST thing to do). http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/ Maybe you shouldn't always be spraying without monitoring pest populations, maybe you should be baiting or doing something else! Maybe I am being totally unfair in supposing you are only spraying, perhaps you are full of IPM wisdom... I sure hope so...

There is a certain company out there that is one of the 2 largest in the USA...I'm not naming names, but I think you get the picture... their former employees are told to spray with water if they don't have chemical, needed supplies are not provided, their ethics are in the gutter, and employee morale is in the toilet. It is because of greedy companies like that that and in turn their employees don't care about their work, so in the end it is the customers that suffer. This is why the pest control industry needs to be unionized. All you can do is do your best to let your customers get to know you and that they CAN trust you.

It depends on how reliable the agency is. Even, being concious about their identities & activities will definitely be good for everyone.
