I don't want it hooked up wireless or anything. I just need to be able to hook it up every now and then for program downloads and updates. Or will I have to set it up if I'm gonna use it for my other computer, ya know, not just plug and go.

I know that I physically can unplug it and plug it into my other computer but will I need to configure it or anything or can I just open up Internet Explorer and go?

If you're using cable modem, connecting to a router(not wireless) allows more computers to connect with ethernet cables. Make sure your settings on IE do not contain any proxy settings.(usually "automatically detect settings" will work).

You can unplug the ethernet cable and plug it into the other computer when you want to download or you can get a router, so they can both connect to the cable modem box.....
