If you look sideways, they're sort of (you have to use your imagination here) facial expressions.

Hi,

These are called smileys. They are used in chatting softwares and mails. Most of the softwares and chat rooms support these and change into a small image/expression. It is like :-) stands for smile, ;-) stands for winking, :-( for sadness and so on.
