I'm not 'clinically depressed', I just get depressed sometimes, and I was wondering if anyone had any pick-me-ups that have worked for them. I've already tried food, and talking to someone is out of the question (does the phrase 'they don't understand' ring any bells?). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sorry to hear that...

just try to sit alone, with no distractions like TV or internet (I know it's hard), and think why you feel the way you do. Is it someone who has hurt you? Has anyone let you down? Do you feel misunderstood? Try to open a discussion within yourself to figure out where this feeling is coming from.

You can also try sports or just going out for a walk, the exercise gives you endorfines which lift your spirit. Also, both sex and coffee have the same effect.

good luck

St. John's Wort is an over-the-counter supplement for health of the mind. Many people take it for mild depression. If you are under 18, be sure to read the label carefully, to insure that you are old enough not to suffer any ill effects (unlikely, but possible).

I've found that a brisk walk or a session of yoga helps or listening to music/dancing around my apartment (the kind of dancing you wouldn't let anybody else see). I used to turn to food and then I realized that I felt guilty after eating say 1/2 a pan of brownies and that just made me feel worse. I also talked to a counselor just to get things off of my chest. She just kind of sat there and absorbed it - didn't really try to tell me what I should do or pretend to sympathize, she just let me talk and get whatever was bothering me out of my system. You might want to reconsider the "talking to someone" thing. It feels a lot better when it's in a confidential setting.

The best medicine I can offer is laughter. Finding something that makes you laugh or feel good creates an escape from the things that you stress.

I too have signs of depression; in fact, many people do, a hobby or anything you enjoy creates a perfect way to equal anxiety and relaxation.

I am actually going through the same thing. Honestly I know that hearing this may piss you off, and I don't mean professional help or anything, but talking to someone does help. If you feel like crying or something. I seriously know how you feel though. Food isn't the answer though. I've been working out and that helps too just to vent my frustration. If you listen to music and run or anything it helps. Just know you aren't alone though.

Exercise can really help. Choose your poison: running, swimming, cycling, walking, treadmill (no TV) ... as long as it's aerobic, every day, and lasts more than 20 minutes.
The thing is (and it's a big thing), you have to do this exercise long enough for it not to be painful and start to be pleasurable (about a month for most people).
Clearly, you are not most people, so decide for yourself when the time comes.
The test is if you miss it when you stop.
Be cool.
PS: love your answers.

How about exercise? Many times I feel depressed, and I don't think ANYTHING will make me feel better. I go for a walk, by myself, and ALWAYS feel better. Even if it's a little bit better, it's something! Also, if you can, take a dip in a hot-tub or jacuzzi. It really helps relax you, and you can think more clearly. Good luck!

cry a little, listening to music...
but i guess the best way is to exercise, because it will release endorphin in your body, which will elevate your mood.
