It means space your hard drive sets aside to use as if it were extra RAM. The less RAM you have, the more important it is to have consistent virtual memory.

Access your virtual memory settings by going to Start > Control Panel > System > "Advanced" tab > Performance "Settings" button > "Advanced" tab > "Change" button.

When your RAM is completely utilized, then the computer will resort to using hard drive space as memory. Hence the name, Virtual Memory. Real memory is RAM.

If it says you are running out of virtual memory, this is implying that you have used all of your RAM and available hard drive space.

I would recommend in upgrading your RAM. If you have 512MB or 1GB, you should not run out of RAM. You can also upgrade your hard drive to a larger size.

If you ran out of hard drive space, I am assuming you have a small hard drive like 40GB or less.
