Why, for example, was the Play Station 3 released in Australia several months after it was released in the USA?

I would first think your comment is case specific. Some items not all items reach your shores latter than others. In the case of play station - that has to be one of marketing. Japan business decision was to go after the US market due to volume in potential sales, profits and quick return on investment. Once they made that killing they expanded into other markets. The tone of the market dictates what success is.

well, let's see. your continent/country isn't real close to anything and can't truck it, railroad it which leaves air/sea delivery of the product. now if it was sent special, the cost would knock your socks off so to offset that, i guess shippers wait until other items are going that way. i'm sure it's beautiful in australia but like every place elsewhere in the world, even paradise has it's price.
