Priceline.com for me is by far the best site for finding good hotels at very cheap prices...(usually half what the advertised price is)
The best way utilize this site is to check the going rate first for whatever hotel you are looking for. including star level and location. Then when you do your homework...You can "name your own price"
Ive gotten 4 star hotels for as little as 55 to 70 dollars a night.
Ive also found that the closer to the date you plan to travel the better the chances are of getting the best price. It seems that if you book a few days in advance instead of a few weeks or months you have a better shot at getting the lower price.
Ive used that site about a dozen times and I have never been disappointed in the hotel I was booked at. The only part some people may not like is that you wont know the exact hotel you will be staying at until you book/pay for it. But I have always gotten a hotel in the area i wanted to be at and a good quality hotel.
Ive stayed at the Westin, Marriot, and similar types with 4 or 5 star ratings. Just be sure to know what you are looking for before hand.
Good luck!

I have normally found the best prices at hotels.com. However, I always check the hotel's own website. Sometimes they are having specials that are cheaper than any of the online hotel reservation sites.
If you want to stay in a place that is unique in California, check out the suggestions at this site: http://www.cheers2wine.com/Wine-Country-Accommodations.html

I have been using priceline.com recently. I have stayed at some very nice hotels for $75.00 or less. The one in Sante Fe should have cost I believe $150 or $160 If you ever go there, check out Hotel St. Francis. I was IMPRESSED. Beautiful historic hotel. But I guess you didn't ask for that info. :-)

I like hotwire.com. I prefer it to priceline.com, because you don't have to go through the whole bidding process and Hotwire is more "family friendly". What I mean by this is: Hotwire allows you to book a room or rooms for a specific number of family members. Priceline only guarantees a room for 2 adults when you bid. When using Priceline, I have had success with hotels cooperating in accomodating my family of four; but there are no guarantees.

www.hotels.com
just go to yahoo and type in cheap hotels..it depends where you are going. if you type in the search engine on a site like priceline.com or travelocity.com or orbit.com..they can book the flight AND the hotel! and show you good hotels in the area. but at least, they can show you hotel fairs.
good luck
