What if a country had people who thought their leaders were friendly, but in fact were its enemy? What if the actions and plans of such leaders projected a future enslavement?

Hong long could that country remain viable?

Would a civil war be inevitable? Would the leaders resort to genocide? What would likely be the government's weapon of choice? When would it spring the trap?

I asked a friend who is a well known American military officer what he would do if given the order to fire on Americans, like in a protest, or upheaval (By the way, this was at the Pentagon, two weeks after 9/11).

He said the FIRST time he got the order, he would likely follow it.

And that's ALL he'd say.

I think a government depends on it's police and military to enforce laws and law and order. But we have a unique military, made up of patriot volunteers. I don't think the government would get very far for very long in a real oppressive movement. The military wouldn't be a part of it.

Such a country would eventually slip into a state of civil unrest as you have correctly pointed out. Many African regimes serve as textbook examples of the scenario you portrayed. Illiteracy and easy access to weapons only aggravate the problem in this case. Even developed countries can fall into such a state as long as the government can build a fear psychosis and keep that alive. Here I am reminded of the film 'V for Vendetta.' Even the denial of civil liberties is tantamount to enslavement.
I cannot estimate the time frame for such a country to remain viable but all I know is that we need to prevent such a situation from happening in our country.

Very sly way to pose the question. You absolutely described our current awful situation. "That country" will remain viable as long as its citizens are too afraid/ignorant/lazy to do anything about it.

You mean, like currently in the US?

It'll be resolved one way or another in the next 6 years.
