It's likely the Penguins have instincts, and choose the best match from the small group they are in. Most animals, penguins included, compete for mates, meaning it's mostly on whether they are strong enough to survive till winter.

It is true for certain species of penguins. They will mate for life and will not find another partner once their life partner dies. Most of the stuff in the happy feet movie is also true. The males do sit on the eggsand hudle together alternating all the time between themselves while the females go off to look for food. Its quite ironic.

Many penguin species mate for life, but birds do not have "soul mates." Neither do humans, for that matter.

No joke, there was a zoo a while back where all the male penguins turned gay.
