That could be the case, but I think it would be rare for someone who loves animals to change their belief system because they have conflicts with one group. I simply stopped sending cheques to PETA and I choose to support more positive groups such as World Wildlife Fund and IFAW. You're right in that one will turn away from a group when it conflicts with their kind and gentle personality (common to animal lovers) but that is only a reason to abandon PETA and not a reason to abandon the animals they try to help.

Not everything they do is irrational and ridiculas. Some followers of PETA do crazy things, and cause the organization to look foolish. But the real cause behind PETA is for animals everywhere to be treated ethically and humanely. Really, if you saw how animals can be treated in labs, or slaughterhouses, puppy mills, etc, I think you would agree that there are problems there. Dont color the whole organization as silly, just because of a few bad eggs.

Its not the animals they are harming, its the people. There's no way that they will make the majority of people (at least) stop eating meat and using animal products. This world was not created for cows and pigs to jump around mindlessly, running through the flowery green meadows, without being eaten, or made into something more useful before they die. There is a thing called the FOOD CHAIN (4th grade material here!), and like it or not, we are a part of it. There is a reason these animals were put here on earth, and it sure isn't to just sit there and do nothing, or just for people to occupy themselves with their cuteness, or serve as pets, or anything of that sort. One organism kills another, whether it be for food, or to survive. Its a necessity.
I do however, agree on their protests against animal cruelty, such as pet abuse, and excessive animal product clothing, because it's not necessary. Sometimes it's okay, if the animal was already dead, or was used for food. But to kill animals to the point of extinction is wrong. We have to preserve species' diversity. As for being a vegitarian solely because you're killing the animals - i think that's a bit extreme (except if they are endangered. tiger anyone?). Life was so much simpler in the past, before PETA, and before people started thinking that every organism has feelings. Sure, some do, but I bet a cow never sits down to cry about the grass it just ate.

I really doubt that many people have stopped being a vegan because of PETA.
PETA does a lot of stupid things, but they do a lot of good as well. It tends to be the stupid things that get media attention, which of course they seek.
I find it amazing that they're they charity that young children most want to join. They must be doing something right.
I think the fact that you're even discussing animal rights now is largely the result of PETA's work, without them, most people wouldn't even consider the issue.

They may turn people off of them with their militant ways, but I don't think people are going out and being cruel to animals just to stick-it to PETA. Let us hope "people" are not that in-humane!

Just watch the show Bullshit by Penn and Teller on Showtime. Or you can look it up on the internet or rent it from a video store. They have a great epsisode on PETA. I love animals but they are extreme!

They do use extreme methods- most of which are completely unnecessary. While it get's their message across to some, it damages their reputation to others. In my opinion- No, animals should not be abused...ever...but solving violence with violence will get them nowhere fast. They should focus more on rescue groups and making sure that animals find proper homes.

Once Peta found out how much attention and $$ it could get for harassing factory farms, it dropped it's whole originating point of taking care of cats and dogs.
