My desktop computer died more than a year ago. The computer stays on 24/7, I can hear the hard drive spinning, but it won't let me get to any files. I must leave this computer on for DSL to work, so I can't remove the hard drive (even if I knew how, which I don't).

Here's what I've got to work with to try to retrieve the files, and I can't afford to take it somewhere to have someone work on it (plus I'm screwed if I disconnect from DSL).

I've got a notebook computer and an external hard drive. Is it possible for me to hook up to the desktop computer and copy the files over?

If so, what kind of cable would I need? Thanks so, so much!

Just to clarify -- I can't unhook this computer and take it to someone. If I do, my DSL goes down and I have no idea how to get it back on. My dad (an electronics genius) set it up for me, but he passed away.

If you can not go to a repair shop iI think it will be difficult for you to recover the files. You can gothrough a paper on computer hard drive problems at http://www.jskproducts.co.uk/harddrive.htm
This report also discusses the feasibility of recovering files from hard drive. I think it will be useful in your case.

you're coping with 2 distinctive computers right here. one that runs on a SATA force an the different an IDE force. you will possibly be able to desire to discover a working laptop or laptop which could run a SATA force, which would be annoying. even although, in case you plug that force in to a extra moderen laptop with 2 not straightforward force bays that are SATA you should in basic terms use that force on your documents and the different one on your working gadget and courses.

Take it to a certified PC repair shop. I took mine to a Radio Shack. Depending on why the puter is dead, they may be able to extract whats there and put it on another drive.
