When dealing with SEO companies be vary wary. There are many methods that can end up hurting your site in the long run even though you might temporarily rank high. Do a lot of research and if it sounds too good to be true it most likely is.
Doing your own SEO is not that difficult and can be done with a little bit of know how and hard work. Check out my site at http://shopautodotcaseo.tripod.com This site has been up for three weeks now and now check out the search engines (Yahoo, MSN and Google) for the search term "shopautodotca seocontest". I am an amateur in SEO and I have done this all in three weeks just fiddling around at night after work. And as my site is in an SEO contest there is a lot of competition and all the other sites are optimizing as well for this search term. (That's me bragging)
But sometimes that is not an option and you must hire someone to do it for you. If you do decide to do that, do your best to find someone local or in your region at least. Do not find some company online that offers cheap SEO and you are not sure where they are located. This will most certainly be your downfall.
SO MOST IMPORTANT: Do lots of research! Find out more about SEO yourself so that when you are choosing your SEO company you know what they are talking about and what they plan to do for your website.

Depending on your website topic I would invest more into adwords/keywords learning for your self.....that way you can do on going updates for yourself for free and you will be much more creative than just seo.....seo does not cover the power of networking sites like myspace. or creative ebay lead generation. good luck.
