i guess, like all the great minds and famous people from the various periods, the travelers of the age of exploration had one main principle - discovery. generally speaking, most historical periods/ages are formed through the realization that dawns upon the people that eventually revolutionizes the way of life. they sought to test the limits and expand them. they felt that there was a lot more to be found out. spurred on by such beliefs, they eventually undertook various means to prove what they believed in. [in reformation (especially in terms of the church), there was the formation of the various sects of the church. in the age of exploration, they traveled to discover new worlds.....so on and so forth]
