They have birth control that you can take while breastfeeding. I have the ring and I breast feed. It says you shouldn't but my doc said it wouldn't hurt the baby. It has given her little boobie lumps, but they will go away after I stop birth control or stop breast feeding. I am not sure about tattoos or piercings though. I think that is would be best to wait in case of infection causing a bad reaction.

The first link is for non-hormonal methods of birth control. That may be an option. Methods of birth control that contain hormones... it is recommended that you wait until you have been nursing for 6 weeks or longer before taking the medication. This is to make sure that your milk supply is well established, since hormone-based methods can decrease your milk supply. Birth control pills that use only progestin are often called "mini-pills." They can be very effective as long as you take the pills at the same time each day or night. Since progestin doesn't enter your milk supply, and these pills are consider safe while breastfeeding. Other methods using only Progestin are Depo-Provera and Norplant and could also be considered. Pills containing Estrogen do enter the milk supply, and you should wait at least 6 weeks after breastfeeding starts to use this form since it can enter the milk supply. These type of pills can cause a decrease in your milk supply. If you are going to use birth control while breastfeeding the best kind would be the Progestin only formula rather than the combined Progestin and Estrogen formula. I hope this information was helpful to you.

It's recommended that any estrogen-containing contraceptive be avoided until baby is at least six months old AND after baby is well-established on solid foods. Estrogen-containing contraceptives have been linked to low milk supply and a shorter duration of breastfeeding even when started when baby is older, after milk supply is well established. Not all mothers who take contraceptives containing estrogen will experience a low milk supply, but these unaffected mothers appear to be a very small minority.
Progestin-only contraceptives are the preferred choice for breastfeeding mothers when something hormonal is desired or necessary. For most mothers, progestin-only forms of contraception do not cause problems with milk supply if started after the 6th-8th week postpartum and if given at normal doses.
Both progestin (progesterone) and estrogen are approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for use in breastfeeding mothers.
In terms of tattoos and piercings - I have gotten 4 tattoos since my son was born 14mths ago, and he is still breastfeeding:) Make sure that the place that you are going to is reputable and sterile, the concern is not the tattoo itself (a common myth was that the ink would go through the skin and into the blood stream and affect the baby), but rather disease from an unsterile shop. It was also recommended to me to wait until nursing is well "established" (ie your baby is a few months old) before getting a tattoo - my son was 4 mths when i got my first post partum tattoo and at that time he could go 2 hours between nursings giving me enough time to get my tattoo done before his next nursing session:)

Birth control pills are not recomended while breastfeeding.
Tattoos and piercing are ok if they are done in a sterile environment.
