He's too hot! This is how lizards cool off, by holding their mouth open. Even if they are sitting under a light basking, they'll just sit there, holding their mouth open, until they cool off, (You'd think, if they got to hot, they would just move, but they don't). ESPECIALLY Anoles. He's fine. Don't worry.

After he cools off, he'll just close his mouth and go back to normal. Anoles puff up their neck, with mouths wide open. I know it looks weird, but don't be scared. He's okay. The reason they puff up their necks is to let cooler air in. Many kinds of lizards do this, it's perfectly natural. It's just look more pronounced in Anoles.

As long as he's eating, and drinking his water. I know ours won't always drink water on his own, so we use a plastic container, and just poked some small holes in the bottom of it, and set it on top of his cage, directly over him, when he's doing that with his mouth. Sometimes he'll drink and drink, cetching each drop, it helps them to cool off faster, if you can encourage them to drink. Sometimes, he'll just sit there with his mouth open, and the water runs down his head. Then I know, he's not thirsty. If it's directly over him, and IF he needs water, he'll drink it. Sometimes they'd just rather cool off, on their own.

NOTE: Double check the temps. in his basking spot, and the rest of the cage, make sure it's like the books say, and just watch him for a week or so, see what temps. he likes to hang out, whether he's down towards the bottom or the top. Hope this helps you.

What type of anole is it, for some anoles this is abnormal, but it is common behavior for most, it is probably cooling itself. Do you spray him with water? if you don't you need to, get yourself a spray bottle and mist him down every day or so, it will help cool him off and he should really like it. I do not think he is sick, if he continues to eat and drink normally, and does not show any other symptoms than I wouldn't worry, Unjoy your anole.

I have several types of lizards and they all open their mouths like that. I've even seen them yawn.

It is becoming warmer where you keep him. This is how lizards act when they are cooling themselves.
