If a gay person doesn't flaunt their lifestyle, come onto straights sexually, or rudely demand special treatment, what possible reason would anyone have to hate a gay person, or any other human for that matter?

This title seems a tad confrontational and incorrect: not all straight people hate gays. I know that probably wasn't your intention but people can be idiots.
Anyway most of the time it is because they are uncomfortable with their sexuality: a lot of homophobes are in fact repressed homosexuals who, in an attempt to distance themselves from the desires they have that they feel are wrong, demonize the ones who openly express them and project their insecurities onto them.

I want to add to the answers given above. I would also say that people hate gays because people have always hated anything that was different from them. Human prejudice is very old and has not gone away.

I would also say that a lot of heterosexuals especially in the "Bible Belt" do not hate gays, they simply believe that homosexuality is wrong. Let me clarify --- you can't hate someone you've never met. A lot of them probably have never experienced homosexual feelings.

Therefore when they are told by a preacher who might as well be the spokesman for God (in their minds) that something is wrong, they are naive enough to believe the preacher. Why is this? Simply because they don't know any better, that's why.

no reason except for the ones you stated.if you were on the other end of things and lost your job because someone who just didnt like you for no good reason got you fired because they were gay and you were not and your stupid company was more worried about being politically correct than getting to the truth then you might understand how a person could feel that way.i do not agree with it but i think that is every persons choice but i do not think it gives you special rights or privileges over anyone else and frankly i dont want to know about everyones love life its too much info and thats why people focus on it.

I'm hetero and I don't hate gays.

I was raised to treat everyone as an equal regardless of who they are until that person does something against you. Then it becomes a personal thing between two people, not a group thing.

some people are just closed minded.... and some are just products of their up-bringing. my parents are strict catholics and are against homosexuallity..... yet my best friend right now is gay and i'm with him a lot. i choose who i like and who are my friends... not because of who they choose to sleep with but because of who they are. some people aren't so fortunate in the open minded area... but oh well, thats life!
