You should not give them an ultimatum unless you want the result. So if you don't mind being fired, sure, go ahead.

Better to put to them in terms that they can understand from their viewpoint. Something like:

'Hey , I have been here two years now and I have been thinking about where I want to be in another two years. I had expected, for instance, that by now I'd be doing X and making Y. That's not what happened, and I'm trying to figure out why. If there's something I'm not doing well, I'd like to get your feedback on what that is so I can change it. If I'm doing fine, then I'd like to know what more I'd have to do to get that raise / promotion / whatever. And you see, I look at it this way: so-and-so at whatchamacallit, Inc., has offered me a job doing this same thing for X dollars more, and I'm having a hard time turning that down. I like it here, but it's hard to escape the feeling that maybe the company's on hard times or maybe you all don't agree with me on my performance. If neither of those is true, I'd like to write up a case justifying an increase in my salary and the conditions that need to be met on both ends. I can present it to you Tuesday, and I'm wondering if Thursday or Friday is better for you to mark it up, get the edits agreed to, and formalize it."

Yeah, I know, parts of this take balls but what have you got to lose, other than self respect for not laying it out?

good luck, I know you'll do fine.

The choice is not "give me more money or fire me." The choice is "give me more money or I'll accept the incredibly generous offer I happen to have in my hand from another company."

Post your resume, look around, get another offer or three, and THEN negotiate for a raise (before you accept the other job, naturally - ditching your prom date isn't good form and neither is ditching an employer after you've agreed to accept an offer.)

Good luck.

The first thing I would do is make an appoitment to sit down with your boss and discuss your value to the company. Ask questions regarding your workload and their expectations. Explain to them the positive things you have done, and ask where there is room for improvement. Let them know you think you have more worth than they are paying you right now. Be polite about it, but if you don't get any satisfaction, I think you would be better off finding another job.

if you truly are really good at what you do, i doubtt you would be asking this question. go find a different job, and when you do put in your two week notice, thats when you' will learn the truth if your good or is it just your opinion. Im a manager at a auto dealership and I make sure the people that are good are getting exactly what they deserve so they don't leave.

are you certified? because if you are or became certified, you could apply for a business license, and become your own boss. sounds to me like the company you work for is a joke, and they have no respect or intention of acknowledging your reliability and talents. look on craigslist, and find yourself a better job! you deserve it!

I wouldn't just quit, but if you have some vacation time, use it to find another job.
