But today my boss says " im bringing chips and dip" and looks at me like 'what are you bringing?'
(This is the first that I've heard of any food bringing .)
Im in between pay checks and cant afford a last minute party purchase.
They know Im a single mother that works part time for minimum wage and all my extra money goes into my gas tank so I can go to school .
I feel bad bcuz I cant bring any food . i cant even make any food bcuz I only have enough to last my son and I til next payday .
I told my boss today that Id try to bring some jello , but I only have one box .
I really dont know the proper thing to do in this situation . What would you do ?

if the wanted you to bring food, they should have told you in advance.

being a single mom is a big deal and most people understand it these days. if someone does happen to ask what you brought, just play it off. dance around the question or bring up a new subject. even if you tell them i don't think they will criticise you for not bringing food. I'm sure there will be plenty enough no one will even notice. there are so many people in my office that wake up late and don't bring food in, at least you have a good excuse. i'd keep the jello, im sure your son would love something sweet to eat.

Don't worry about the "proper" thing. I think that you should go with your gift and have a great time. Don't worry about bringing something with you. If these people can't understand the struggles of a young sinlgle mother then they don't deserve you as a friend. I DEFINITELY don't think that you should borrow money. You don't want to get into the habit of being lended to. This could eventually lead to "issues" with credit card companies and banks and other lenders on down the road. You have to understand that a LOT of people are in your shoes and it's nothing to be ashamed of when you have a tight budget to work with.

I'd take the jello and don't worry 'bout it.

It's a bad time and between pays..if you could borrow a couple of bucks till payday, that would make you feel a little better, but really, I don't think it is all that big a deal.

Drinks, cookies, cupcakes, or a bake cake because they are cheaper and always on sell. I would borrow some money from a close friend until you can pay them back. But that isn't fair that your boss sprung that on you at the last minute. Honestly, the hostess is suppose to supply those things at the party.

I'd just make the box of jello. You are already bringing a gift. It shouldn't be a big deal. Most of the time people don't remember that stuff anyway.

An office baby shower for a women who I'm guessing isn't a lifetime friend, isn't worth taking away from yourself or your son. I would bring nothing and if anyone has the gall to ask why, if you want to tell the truth go for it. Or tell them it's sitting on the counter at home. :)

I'd borrow a few bucks from someone until payday.

You could get a piece of wire and make a snare then use it to catch a squirrel or rabbit. That's good eatin'.
