Newton, galileo, especially Galileo. He was put under house arrest because he said the the Earth revolves around the sun, and that the sun is the center of the universe. His books were burned, and a lot of negative thoughts were spread about the 'insane guy agaisnt the word of God'. After he died, the nutheads who arrested him learned that he was right.

I always heard that Vincent Van Gogh was insane or close to insanity.
Howard Hughes was something, not necessarily insane, but totally crazy. I think he had obssesive compulsive disorder or something of the sort, but it was to major extremes.

Perhaps several but most undiagnosed. First that popped into my mind was Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. His madness was fueled by Opium and Absinthe. He was a brilliant artist, however.
