I am a tourist and will be in Kuala Lumpur from 30 mar to 4 April. I would like to visit Penang on a full day trip. I am booked to stay at The Corus Hotel - Jalan Ampang. Can someone tell me the quickest way other than air to reach the island of Penang.

Hi Anna!

i just had a great trip by a double deck coach http://www.aeroline.com.my
to Penang recently..and believe me or not..the journey was a breeze and its only takes approximately 4 hours to get there!! The coach fare for one way trip is MYR 55.00/person and in the includes light snacks and beverages onboard. Departure will be at One Utama Shopping Complex located in Bandar Utama and will be arriving in Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal in Penang. From Corus Hotel..it will only takes you less than one hour to get you to One Utama, where the coach departs.

Happy travelling!!

Tips: its actually the best to drive a car yourself to Penang as you can go by own time and do your own things..but it takes you to be extra caution as you are not familiar with the highways or the area..if you taking a bus to go there..you dont have to worry to get lost somewhere..

Bus is okay, but u have to find other public transport to travel when u arrived. If u drive a car there, u can take ur own time and enjoy the trip. Once ur on the island u already have a trans port to circle the island. By the way, don't forget to try the ferry to Penang and u can go back using the penang bridge.

Welcome to Malaysia...if you feel you want to move freely around take a drive to Penang using North South highway. It will cost you a mere RM 46.00 (total for one way toll ) and RM 7.00(pay only for one way) to drive through Penang bridge.
Make sure your car condition is in good shape.
The best time for you to take off from your hotel will be 7.00 to 7.30am before the usual working hour jam. Use the Jalan Duta toll to enter and should drive without any hitch. Normally it will take 4 to 5 hrs to reach Penang if you take half an hour break in between driving.
A word of cautious though, while its enjoyable to drive in Penang, watch out for the motorbikes on your left and right side of your car!
If you're adventurous enough drive round the whole of Penang where you will find some breathtaking view from the hillside. Needless to say, you'll love the food over there...
Happy journey Anna!

Take a bus (4.5 hours) to Penang, rent either a car or bike when u are in Penang. Spend one night as it will be much better. U should not rush yourself.

The quickest way of cause, is by car. It will take 6-7 hours if you drive. Taking a bus is an alternative way if you can't rent a car or not so sure about the route. Buses consume more time because they tend to stop a few times on the way.

Uhm... it's all a matter of preference, really *shrugs*
Although, I agree with everyone else before me that by car is best as you get to see the sights at your own pace.
However, if you're unfamiliar with M'sian roads, it may not be the most advisable plan. Which leaves the other option: the bus.
There's a wide selection of air-conditioned & comfortable coaches that serve light snacks on board i.e. the Executive coach, etc.
Hope this helped:)
Have fun!

if you spending a 2-3 days there car it the best option because you can drive around visiting one place to another.
The public transport in penang is not convenient unless you go by taxi
If you only have 1 day, take a flight. you can get a cheap ticket by airasia www.airasia.com

Either by bus or by train. If you are not really pressed for time, take the train. Rather comfortable but make sure you do not take the economy class. Take the air-conditioned coaches.
