Seriously, does anyone else get upset when they see so many people on here with horrible grammar and mechanics? I seem to lose trust in anything the person says; I'm talking about blatant mess-ups, not "teh". It makes me wonder how intelligent most of the people in this community are.

Some say, "Why does it matter if there's good grammar?" and others say, "WE DON'T have time to spell things correctly!" First of all, this forum deals with people's answers to real questions. Answering with bad grammar just makes one look incredible, thus making the answer almost void. Besides, a lot of the grammar mistakes end up distorting the question or comment to the point where one can't understand it.
Please, it doesn't take that long to use correct grammar. Plus, if you're on Y!A, then you probably have time on your hands.

One thing to note though..is that some of the users on Y!A are from places other then "english speaking" nations..
You have to remember that they are probably typing in their Qs and As in their native tongue etc...and that's either getting translated by the Y!A software, or their web browser..

I agree that the younger audience has the grammar of my 5yr old son, however I think some of (not the majority) but some of the issue is those foreign users..

(I know I've made the mistake of clicking one of those flags below, and yah..I was hitting the back button b/c I could not read any of it. Wonder what would happen if I typed in a response...)..

but that's just me speculating..

You really shouldn't base your definition of "intelligence" around any given persons ability to write a coherent paragraph...

I write for a living, and have become familiar with structural guidelines regarding common vocabulary, punctuation, grammatical phrasing, etcetera. On the other hand, my wife is slightly dyslexic, and has always been troubled by common spelling mistakes, singular vs. plural distinctions (how they're spelled), and the like. But, given the amount of mindless writing I have done in the past and the various topics that I've researched; I couldn't pass a trigonometry exam to save my life. My wife has a profound knowledge of advanced mathematics that would make most people highly envious - myself included.

My old college professor could lecture for days on the most intricate of details surrounding quantum physics and applied theory, but even he had a rough time dealing with simple grammar... and it showed. He practically never wrote anything on his dry-erase board, and instead, he structured his lectures around digital lessons that were created on his computer... where 'spell-check' was readily available.

As difficult as you may find it to read sentences laden with horrific grammatical errors, you'll sometimes find that the person who wrote it was, in fact, pretty intelligent after all.

Well that's the way of the internet.
I don't see it is a sign of stupidity so much as just not caring that much about grammar. Also people are trying to save as much time as possible and it's not that important on Yahoo Answers to have good grammar, so a lot of people just say "Why bother?"

Dude this isn't English class. This is Yahoo Questions and Answers. If you're that concerned with sentence structure and punctuation you are in the wrong forum.
