I had this problem with my little sister. Here is what you do... Take 8 Q-tips, clean water (bottled if you want), peroxide, and Alcohol. First clean the area with the water using two Q-tips, then using another 2 Q-tips wipe the area clean again with the peroxide, next do the same cleaning action with the alcohol (Blow gently as you do this one the cutie pie will not like this part at all!) Finally if there is a bit of discharge wipe it away with the last of the clean Q-tips.

Do this twice a day other wise wipe the area clean with the little alcohol towels. Be sure to fold the Dippy so that it doesn't irritate the area. Also Keep that area as dry as possiable. Babies at that age don't sweat so just keep him cool.

Hope this helps.

It probably got infected at the bottom of the belly button because of the diaper rubbing it. You need to follow up with the pediatrician for sure. In the mean time you should continue to care for it by keeping it dry and clean and keep the diaper away from it. If it's not too painful (or if the ER didn't already give you something else to clean it) you should still clean it with alcohol pads like they show you in the hospital. That is how I cared for them until they fell off and none of my children's cords ever got infected. Best wishes.

I just had this same problem when my son was born 23 days ago. Honestly my Doctor, just told me to keep cleaning it with alcohol after every diaper change. and once the bigger piece falls off then to rub triple antibotic cream. You can always rub it on now, but it takes longer for it to dry out.

My sons was red and really smelly, but not seeping a lot. I hope this is helpful.

My nephew had the same problem. So my sister kept it clean and put the cream that the doctor gave her on it. It never fully fell off and he's now 4 years old with a little tiny bump on his belly button - but it doesn't hurt him.
