What can I do to make sure that I maximize each pump? When I pump, I want my milk production to be at its peak. Can I produce more milk if I eat within an hour of pumping? What about drinking?

I would say eat and drink when your body tells you to. I do know that you have to increase you h2o intake from 8 glasses a day to 12-15. If you want professional advise, call the hospital where you had your baby and ask to talk to a lactation specialist...its free
Also, are you feeding baby directly from your breast for most feedings?
I know that pumping does not produce as much or as good of quality breast milk.

It does not matter when or how much you eat or drink, just so that you are within your daily requirements for a nursing mom. Your milk production correlates with how much you nurse and pump and how many time you do it in a day. Your breast will start to act in a supply and demand kind of way. If they get used at a certain time of the day more than other times the supply will be greater at that time. Try to pump at a consistent time every day, while you are relaxed and not in a hurry. I nursed three babies till they were about 12 months if that helps. Hope you are able to continue, if not that's fine. Just remember that what is important is your baby is loved and well cared for. There is nothing wrong with supplementing or bottle feeding.

I would say the best time to eat is about an hour before breastfeeding, but definitely whenever you are hungry. Your body is using more energy and needs more nutrients while breastfeeding. About the drinking...I would say drink ALL the time. LOL Your body needs it. Also, the more you pump and breastfeed, the more milk you are going to produce. What I did after I gave birth to my daughter was drank LOTS of water and ate a lot of fresh fruits and veggies (stay away from garlic, spicey foods, broccolli, onions, and other gassy foods). Also, take your prenatal vitamins just as when you were pregnant. When my daughter was newborn, I kept a fruit tray and a big glass of water next to my chair so that I could snack and drink while she was nursing because, as you know, it sometimes takes a while for a newborn to nurse because they fall asleep so often while nursing. Good luck with everything and hope this helps! Congrats on the new little one! Keep up the good work!

I've never heard of an optimum time to eat or drink to keep milk production, just eat when you're hungry. It takes about an hour for your breasts to fill, so pump frequently.

Make sure you always have a little snack and drink nearby when you're pumping or nursing... as soon as i have a letdown my stomach starts growling and that'll be the time my son wants to stay on for half an hour or more!

eating oatmeal boosts milk production, so does taking feengreek (sp), Milk is produced the most between 1-6 am. so set an alarm for every 1.5 or 2 hours. Drink lots of water and cut out caffine if possible. warm compress on the breast will cause it to let down faster. having baby in the room or something of the baby's will help with letdown also.

Eat about 1.5 hours before pumping and drink as much water/juice as possible starting 2.5 hours before pumping. Pump at a time when your child would normally eat. Pumping is really hard...if I wasn't only part time I wouldn't have been able to continue to breastfed.

Eat when you're hungry, drink when you're thirsty. Your body knows what to do...and the more you pump the more hind milk you will get. Make sure you have a good pump (Medella is the cadillac of breast pumps!) and do it...I found that while baby fed on one side I was able to pump on the other and it worked pretty well...also right after baby fed.

the only way i got any milk to come out when pumping was if i drank for 5 minutes before pumping, and drink continuosly (spelled wrong im sure) while pumping. This worked very well for me.

Make sure to drink plenty of water that is what increases your flow! For me it was hard because i am not big on water but that is what needs to be done! Good job on keeping with it. you are doing a great thing for your little one!
