Sure you can. Desire does not imply understanding. We want a lot of things that we don't really understand; I wanted an iPod, but I didn't know how they worked. Even if you're confused about something or have no understanding of it at all, if you desire it -- if you want to have it -- then you want it.

'Self interest' is a tricky sort of thing. You can certainly want something that isn't good for you, but is having that thing in your self interest because you want it, or not in your self interest because it's not good for you? You might want something bad for you, but you don't want anything you don't... well, want. (But, of course, you might NEED something you don't want.)

Of course you can!!! "Love" is a perfect example. Many want it, many even have it!!!! Do they or can they understand or comprehend it in its fullest context/extent? No. Human beings are not capable of such things yet, (probably never will be).

"Not in your own self interest"? Why would you want something let alone bother to understand it if its not in your own self interest???

The term you're looking for is "inchoate longing".

The desire for something undefined or incompletely understood.

And, sure, lots of people have a hunger for something without knowing what it is that they humger for.
