Any awards show is basically an excuse for that industry to pat itself on the back. I don't think the Academy Awards, or any film or TV related awards show, really does what it's supposed to (that being, give an award based on the merit of that film or show). Sometimes the Academy voters get it right - Philip Seymour Hoffman winning for Capote was a win that was based on the merit of his performance. Schindler's List was a remarkable achievement of film. But Denzel Washington, while a wonderful actor, took home a statue because he had been overlooked so many times in films that were much better than Training Day. Crash won Best Picture because it dealt with a social issue that is easily accessible - even though among it's competition, Good Night and Good Luck was more intelligent, Capote was more cohesive and a stronger story, and Brokeback Mountain blended great cinematography, direction, acting, and writing.
Trend-wise for acting noms, it always seems like an actor is a shoe-in if he/she plays either a character who is physically or mentally handicapped, or ugly. Take Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump, or Nicole Kidman in The Hours.
Best picture awards are heavily biased towards drama, even though, in terms of the skill of the people involved in crafting the film, good comedy is much harder to produce. I think that's one of the reasons why so many big name stars are turning toward independent films, which tend to have a higher quality of drama than studio-produced movies. They get more recognition, and more roles and more money, if they get more award nominations.
For the record, the Oscars and all of its ilk irritate the hell out of me. I haven't watched an Oscar ceremony from start to finish since Julia Roberts' won over Ellen Burstyn, which was a crime against humanity in my opinion. It's just a big, televised popularity contest, that unfortunately has too much influence over the film industry.

You can't please everyone all the time! If a popular entry did not win the Oscar, we do have such question being raised all the time. Like the 2002 Oscar to Denzel Washington, for his role as a corrupt cop, the first Oscar to a black guy and people started saying it was so because of 9/11 and everyone was mourning and did not really feel like having the Oscars that year, so why not present it to a Black Man.

Oh, yeah. The Oscars have already lost all credibility. They are simply a political statement by the Hollywood left. I quit watching them about 5 years ago when I hadn't seen one movie that was up for "Best Picture." It's kind of a joke anymore. I still like to watch the stars arrive on the red carpet, hoping that someone falls down, trips, or has a piece of food between their front teeth, or a bra strap showing. That is about as much entertainment as the Oscars are for me.

I just thing award shows have lost their way when they started allowing acceptance speeches become the platform for political, and self promotion, (My album is coming out etc etc)
Thank God and your agent your spouse then get the F#@$ off the STAGE!!
Also I don't think foreign films should qualify unless they have been released in mainstream American theaters.
It stinks when a film I never heard of gets nominated.

Oscars are all bout politics and definitely not in tune with the main stream movie goers. Think about movies your grandparents would like to view.....those are the one they call winners.
