I used to have a dog that would take every opportunity to dig out under the fence or find some other way out and run off in the neighborhood.
Nothing I tried would convince him not to take off.
On day, I sat on the front porch and waited for him to return. when he did, I chased him away with a broom. I sat there for a couple hours and every time he tried to come back I would chase him away. After dark, I went in, leaving the gate open. After that, he never ran away again.
