I like to read about people who succeeded despite the odds, and humanitarian missions...it keeps me from getting cynical in this day and age :)
Some great books I liked in this category:
Shake Hands With the Devil, Romeo Dallaire
Angela's Ashes, Tis', and Teacher Man, Frank McCourt
The Heart of A Woman and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou

I also enjoy reading stories about how someone overcame any kind of adversity. It can be very inspiring & makes me appreciate my hum-drum life that much more. Adventure travel stories are also some of my faves (Kon Tiki, Paddle to the Amazon, that kind of thing). Reading really old travel adventure stories can be quite interesting/amusing.

I like reading stories about people's experiences during wars. We tend to think of war as a big overview but its a real eye-opener to stop and listen to a single experience. I liked Eli Weisle's (sorry i think its spelled wrong) "Night." Its about the author's life during the holocuast.

i like to read about inspiring stories how they overcame certain things-kind of lived to tell kind of books like the pursuit of happyness or the glass castle-they move me the most or ones that are historical recollections, like night, or the motorcycle diaries, also emotional ones that bring out feelings about real people who, and how they were, like tuesdays with morrie.
all in all i enjoy reading true stories over fiction sometimes...
