and what point if any did they change the 4cyl block,year started and year stopped, i'm wondering if i buy another motor to rebuild from a later or older year of 240D mercedes will everything be the same, bolt holes/ Injector pump/ head/ trans plate/ and so on, can anyone give me a little history on these little motors, i really like them and just want to learn as much as possible about them, thank you so much.

There were two versions of the OM616 engine. It was introduced in 1973 as an upgrade motor for the old W115 chassis, and carried the designation 616.916.The 240D continued in the W123 chassis from 1977-1985, carrying the designation 616.912. I suspect the changes were minor.
