Well in some beliefs you are enlightened. This is mostly fallowed by reincarnation believers.
According to what has been 'channeled' through people by spirits you go through many lives to learn a lesson.
Once all your lessons are learned you pretty much became a like an "ultimate spirit"
So this is only one out of thousands of different beliefs but it just so happens I believe in it.
You should try reading the book "Many Minds, Many Masters"
I loved it. I read it when I was rather young to so it's an easy read.
It's just in human nature that people talk poorly of others and make poor options.
Imagine living in a world where everything was perfect to everyone. Nobody disagreed on anything.
Many religions wouldn't be here. Erm you would never rebel and do ANYTHING creative right? Pretty creepy eh?
So maybe another view is nobody could possibly be the best person they ever knew right?
Just some things to think about =]

people talk better about the deceased because its respectful to the dead but also because it touches closer to their fears. Even an annoying person when dead can become scary because it reminds us of our mortality and how we wish that when we die it will seem like what we have done in our lifetime is worth mentioning as well. If I recognize that my dead rival was just a petty turd and that he never did anything of conswquence then I will be basically in the same boat and afraid that I have accomplished nothing.

Because people are just odd like that. They take people for granted and Talk about them Like they are trash, and when they are gone, they finally realize the depth of emotion they had for the person and There entire story changes.
But that doesn't make Us better people after we Die, That just means That those people who act the way "Some People" do are Emotionally Unaware.
Enjoy.

I have no idea. I believe that if I do not like someone when they are alive then I will not like them when they are dead. It seems like an insult to the dead person to all of a sudden turn around and like them so much after they die.

I think we have to distinguish the meaning of “talking bad”.
Bad in a sense is good for you, which you have yet to appreciate the purpose behind the reprimand. I guess the reprimand has taken effect over the years for you to open up, and eventually appreciating its content of usefulness. The serenity of the occasion (death) has somewhat open up the awareness in you as well. Anyway, it is not too late to make amends for any wrongdoings.

Perhaps because the dead cannot defend themselves from slander. In that case, it might be best to give people the benefit of the doubt. It may also be because the people who like to bad mouth other people are upset that they have to go looking for another target to project their negative views on to.

It is bad Karma to speak ill of the dead. Also a lot of the time they feel guilty for not resolving issues with the person while they were alive. And, of course, they can do no more bad things.

Because we're highly emotional creatures. The sense of loss we feel when someone we know dies can overpower other thoughts and feelings about that person.

Ultimately, yes, because when we die we are free from being human at all.
