Because "neo" was most commonly used to describe the nazi "movement" in the previous 2 decades, so when you want to draw a parallel between right wingers and nazis, you use the "neo" prefix. Its propoganda. The left are actually "neo" communists, but nobody will call them that. 'Cept me.

There most definitely are neo-Libs. Most Democrats today are neo-Libs. The original liberals believed in a person's right to live their life free of government intervention, as long as they did not infringe on the right of others to do the same. Today's Liberals, the social Liberals, or neo-Liberals, want the government to provide everything for the people of this country. They have removed themselves so far from being real liberals, hence they are neo-Liberals.

The term "Neo-Con" refers to a division within the conservative movement.

Originally, conservatives were for small federal govt, and state control of their social agenda.

In the 1970s and 1980s, many ex-Democrats joined the Republican party and took on the conservative social agenda. But they knew the advantages of a large federal govt to enforce their social agenda nationally.

Hence, the new conservaties (Neo-Cons) who like big federal govt, versus the original fiscal conservative who want small govt.

Liberals almost univerally want large government to provide social programs.

Those that don't like large govt in any form usually end up becoming Libertarians. But since Libertarians have been around for a long time, they are not new.

The prefix "Neo" is defined as a "Near Earth Object". If you combine "Neo" + "Liberal" you get a Liberal that is Near Earth which is impossible. Does this help?
