Hi, I'm going to Riga, Latvia in May and wonder what the cigarettes cost over there? I will go by ferry from and to Stockholm.

I would like to know prices on brands like Marlboro, Prince and also the "cheaper" brands. It might be Wall Street, Vermont, Corner or other decent brands. I have no idea what they have. I would like to know the price of a carton of 10.

Also, do they have fixed prices or is it worth while looking around?

Hoping for replys,

Thanks in advance

/ Peter

The cigarette prices in Latvia are fixed.
A carton of 10 of Camel costs 8,20 LVL (108,47 SEK), a carton of 10 of Phillip Morris costs 6,90 LVL (91,27 SEK), a carton of 10 of Caines costs 6,50 LVL (85,98 SEK) and a carton of 10 of L&M costs 5,50 LVL (72,75 SEK). I am not familiar with the prices of the cheaper brands, but they can be bought in Latvia, too, including Wall Street, Vermont and Corner.

The ten most sold cigarette brands in Latvia in 2006 were:
1. L&M
2. MARLBORO
3. MONTE CARLO
4. ELITA
5. WALL STREET
6. WINSTON
7. RED&WHITE
8. MORE
9. BOND
10. MAIN

You could try emailing this chain of tobacco stores in Latvia, perhaps they can give you more information:

Also, until May the prices might increase by about 10%, Latvia has recently increased the excise tax on cigarettes, however, the tobacco wholesalers still have old stock to sell. If they run out of this old stock until May the price will be about 10% higher, and in this case it really might be worth looking around for a shop that still has cigarettes from the old stock. Perhaps they will not run out, though - currently every shop is still selling old stock cigarettes. One more thing - in Latvia, the price of cigarettes is also written on the excise tax sticker, which is glued on the pack.
