I am obsessed with softball, and when ever i hear people say, Softball isnt a sport, or, Softball is to easy, i get upset. I just think that people need to get out there and play the sport before they judge it. But my question is, Why do people always say things like that?

To MVPJOE. Softball isn't easy at all. Have you ever played? All I'm saying is if you have played softball like a lot of girls have, you wouldn't think it was easy. Try it and if you still think it is easy, you haven't played that hard. The ball is much harder to catch due to it's size, and sure it might (but it isn't) be easier to hit, but you cant get it very far, unless you are super strong, because it weighs more than a baseball. So just take that into consideration.

I am an ex baseball player that has turned into a big fan of women's fast pitch softball. Hs329 was absolutely correct when she pointed out it is a much faster game than baseball. The players reaction time must be faster for batters and for fielders. I was converted years ago when I was talked into coaching a high school girls softball team. The girls are much better athletes than they were then, and the game is awesome to watch. We recently let the boys baseball team try to hit the girls pitcher (they were making the same remarks your referring to), she struck out 6 of the 7 guys that tried to hit against her. And the boys won their conference. Now they come to the girls games and root for them too.

They say them because they're uninformed. A lot of people actually think softball is harder than baseball is. The ball is larger, making it harder to throw. The pitching technique takes more time to learn for most, and it usually requires more practice in order to throw different pitches. The bases are closer together (which makes up for some of the ball's heaviness, but not all) making the game go much quicker. Softball players have much less time to make a play than baseball players do because the diamond is smaller. So, in general, when someone says something negative about fast-pitch it's because they don't know what they're talking about.

To me it matters which softball you are talking about... Girls fastpitch or mens, or slow pitch softball leagues. To most who watch girls softball or have ever tried hitting, it isnt easy by any means, and defense is crazy. 3rd base for example is almost never behind or even with 3rd, you have to be bold to play that position, and hitting is very hard.

Slow pitch softball on the other hand is different, it isnt that it is easy, because it honestly isnt, if you played baseball or softball in college or highschool, timing is so off on the slow arch and doing anything besides hitting a groundball is hard, and if you play infield period in slow pitch softball you better have a steel cup, nothing but bullets. The problem with that is that everyone can play, but not everyone can play well, guess that might be why they claim it to be too easy.

Because a lot of "normal" or out of shape guys can play, enjoy, and excell at it, some say it is not a sport. I believe it definitely is though. Fielding a big softball is tough. If it was really that easy to play, everyone would hit homers all the time, and I know from experience that does not happen... Good question.

People have never said that to me. In Texas, though, we're considered to be the most competive state for softball... us and California. But on TV once, they had MLB players trying to hit against Jennie Finch and none of them got a solid hit. The either fowled or struck out. You have to have a faster reaction time because the distance from pitcher to catcher is shorter. You have to be faster fielding because the have shorter distance to be safe. On the other hand, our sweet spot on the bat is bigger. The ball is also bigger, making it easier to track. Like you said it's harder to hit it as far... that's true but our fences are shorter.
Main answer though, they don't know what they're talking about. Don't let it get to you if softball is what you love.

People think it is easier and not as hard as baseball, because the ball is bigger.
I play baseball but i no this isn't true, softball is a hard sport.

All you have to do is point to Jenny Finch. No one has hit a Home Run off of her. Not even Barry Bonds. The ball comes so much faster because of the distance from the plate to the mound it's more like a 120 MPH fastball coming at you.

Well people who say it's easy have obviously never played it before. I actually think it's harder than baseball, and I've played both. I agree with you, they should at least try to play the game before they say things about it.

There is nothing wrong with softball it is basically the same as baseball just made easier so that more people can enjoy it. There are less chances to get injured and it is cheaper.
