I still think MB cars are a bit better than BMW, although I like BMW cars. as far as a merger is concerned it was more like Daimler bought Chrysler and is now trying to unload it because yes Chrysler products improved because of MB, the MB line kind of faltered but is making a come back. One of the ways MB will come back strong is by getting rid of Chrysler. I know GM and Toyota were in talks to aquire Chrysler. I heard that Hyundai-Kia group was also think about it. What a joke that would be. And yes there was a problem with bosch on some e-class alternators.

Persons opinions about cars are based upon there own experiences, and just with anything one can always get a bad one.
DiamlerBenz has been a leader in the automotive industry for years. They have had there problems, Mercedes tried to reduce the price of there cars thinking that the quality would not suffer, the E and C classes are the results, and justly not known for the best quality.
I have an E320 and can not say that I had encountered anymore or less problems than I would have had with any another car. What I can say is that I have never owned a better car. It is the perfect combination of performance, luxury, and reliability.
Diamler buying up Chrysler was good for Chrysler, the quaility of Chrysler products went way up and now they are in the black. It was regretable that they could not market the Mercedes TDI or offer the TDI's in the Chrysler line up. I do not think that Chysler gain while Mercedes fell. When you build the car that everyone compares their product to you must be doing something right.
Everyone has there preference, and I think BMW should have stuck to motorcycles, and until the address the overheating death kneels of there mixed alloy engines they will never be know for longevity. I friend of mine finally unloaded his 7 series BMW which spent more time in the BMW garage than in his, but hey it just could have been one of the cars made on a day Bayern Munchen had a game. He now drives a VW and is happier. BMW is a wealthy company and BMW is a challenge to Mercedes, but BMW needs to get allot more of there cars over the 200000km mileage marker.

its hard to say unless you actually work in a plant or have access to managerial data by MB. I own a 2002 e 430 and have had minimal issues with it. I purposely bought this year because the reliability was higher than the '03 and newer models. I agree with "anywhere" regarding the Bosch parts issue, This has been well documented in the press, and has cost MB many potential buyers. They have bought either Lexus, BMW, or Audi. The difference with BMW is they are sportier cars and handle great. Overall MB is more luxury and a comfortable ride. BMW is noisier from the inside than MB. MB interior will always look more expensive. I really like both BMW and MB. The amg and M series are for the serious enthusiast. If ur uncle drove a BMW M5 or M6 or an S65 AMG he would think the 7 series is a piece of crap after driving any of those cars. So its all relative. there are many grips from my friends that own BMW too. I dont think the chrysler angle has much to do with it. Just like ford has nothing to do (except money) with Aston Martin.

Some people are full of opinions but do not seem to know what they are talking about.
Yes, the quality of Mercs has gone downhill and it's probably not because of Chrysler.
I take serious exception to the notion of the E-Class being a piece of crap. If you are talking about the W124, made from '86 to '95, this is one of the best cars ever built. I happen to own one. It was hand-assembled, and is one of the last non-disposable cars ever made. When it's 15 years old you can rebuild it for a few thousand dollars and drive it another 10-15 years or more. How many other cars can you say that about? The W124 E-Class was the hallmark of Mercedes and the legacy they have been trying to rebuild ever since the new E-Class (W210) hit the market in all its disposable glory.

Mercedes is suffering because of it's own mess. If anything, their problems have spilled over onto Chrysler. The E-class, for example, was under developement for years before Chrysler was even considered as a partner. It was always manufactured in Stuttgart, and it's always been a POS. A lot of their problems stem not from Chrysler, but rather from flakey electronics by Bosch, problems which I have no doubt are shared with BMW. And I've never known anyone to buy a BMW for it's reliability.

The Chryslers have become better vehicles while the MB's have suffered in quality. D-B is trying to unload Chrysler now. The question is: will MB ever rebound and become the benchmark that BMW chased and exceeded?

I don't think you can blame Chrysler for Mercedes problems. Chrysler also makes crap but it's no worse than what Benz is doing right now.
Call it "prosperity disease" if you will--resting on one's laurels while the new kids on the block beat your butt silly.
