How to connect mac to wireless internet?

I have a netgear router, and I don't know how to get my wireless to work. It works for my dad's laptop, but I can't get it to work for my new macbook.

system prefs > network > Show: Airport > Show Airport status in menu bar CHECK

(this ^ might already be on, check to see if you have the menu bar item)

go to the menu bar item, select your router, plug in the password (if you have one).
