There is currently no upper limit for folic acid and 1mg seems to be the new general dosage for pregnant women, although I thought that was just for at-risk or overweight women? I'm getting behind. Folic acid is actually B9. It needs B12 and B6 to work properly. As far as I know, there is no reason to take excessive folic acid after 12 weeks of pregnancy since the affected areas have completely formed by then. Below I have included fact sheets from the National Health Institute (US Govt) on b6 and folate (b9).
Because I normally have high iron levels, prenatals actually make my iron levels too high. But I am not the norm. Here's an article that I think would help you on that. If you think the iron amount you are taking is excessive, ask to have a blood test to determine if, in fact, that is true.

Have you been diagnosed with anemia? If your iron is low, it is normal to take your prenatal with iron, and an extra iron pill. You will know if you have too much iron because you will get constipated! If you are worried, just take your prenatal until you speak to your doctor in person. But you need to do as he says. He has been trained so he knows what you should be taking. If you don't trust his advise, you need to find another physician. Also, b6 if a form of folic acid, from what I understand.

the rda for pregnant chicks is 400 micrograms. for iron In pregnancy, the RDA is 30 mg, 3 mg of which is absorbed. Well-balanced diet does not provide adequate RDA for elemental iron; therefore, iron supplementation is recommended in pregnancy. folic acid is B9 not B6. B6 is pyridoxine. it sounds to me your doctor knows what he's doing. i would trust him, no one said you were an idiot, he's not making you take these for some twisted reason he's making you take them because they are good for you. if you dont trust him find another doctor dont just not take something he recommends.

You can't get too much folic acid...your body won't store excess...it will be eliminated in your waste. Average iron intake is about 60 mg, but anemic women can be perscribed over 100 mg daily. Trust the nurse...she knows what she is talking about.

are you the doctor? take your pills. they aren't for you, they are for your baby. trust the medical staff. they have no reason to lie to you and they won't tell you to take something that could hurt your or the baby.
