If you're born here, you're an American and the only "true" Americans are Native Americans. I HATE being called African American because there is a lot more to my heritage than whatever ancestor who was from there, and there's also the fact that I think we all need to be viewed as just Americans. It's silly to label everyone.
To the person saying that he is being naive, I completely disagree. Anytime you hear someone being talked about in the media who isn't white, they automatically get the label of some hyphenated American. In school it's the same way, everywhere it's the same way. It's ridiculous because we're all Americans. Plain and simple.

"Great con of the century?" Are you serious? This quote closely resembles the old fashioned bigotry that you claim to abhor.
America is flourishing with culture, and regardless of what you may think you know, it is still a beacon of opportunity for anyone from any given nationality.
...sorry you mistook "opportunity" for "effortless inheritance" when you were applying for your green-card, but in America, you have to earn your status as an accomplished individual. There are plenty of Asian-American millionaires, African-American millionaires, Native-American millionaires (and, yes, European-American millionaires) living among us.
Your naivete is preventing you from seeing Americans as Americans, and instead brings you to the ridiculous conclusion that only Caucasians are viewed as Americans in the eyes of foreigners.

My teacher says it's because language is a powerful weapon. Political correctness can be very deceitful. You pick a word, give it a fancy name and at the same time you are telling to the word:this is bad, but we're gonna call it in a fancy way, so it's okay.

I think that you are an American if you are born IN America. If you were born elsewhere, no I don't think that you should be called an American. Anyways, African-Americans are only called that b/c if you call them simply "black" they get mad. And yes, the Indians were here first...But once again, you can't call them "Indians" b/c if you do, they'll get mad. So they are Native-Americans. I don't mind being called just "white."

I know what you mean. When you heard "an american" you suppose they're talking about a white guy. When they not, they add "afro, native, asian.." The term european-american exists, but nobody uses it. So it's another macho head game...

No, there are white people that also live in Europe, and slavic nations like Bulgaria and Russia. I think there's more overseas than there are here in America.

seems everyone wants to be equal, but wants to consider themselves in a special class too. can't have it both ways. if you have legal or naturalized citizenship in the USA, you are an American -nada mas nada menos.
