The answer is right under your nose. Start reading through some of the questions that other people have asked. There are so many of them that come out of left field, you should be able to come up with a good interesting topic.

Let me tell you how to beat writers' block. Put the pen down and pick up a minimum of two books - great classics. Read them before you even try writing again. Then if the piece you are working on is still not coming, try something new -- something you know. Write anything - an essay about the lunchroom at school, what's its like in the boys locker room after gym, anything... Try going to some stock photo sites and picking photos and writing short stories about what you think is happening. I always do an exercise with my CW classes called A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words. I give them famous paintings and ask them to write a scene telling me what's happening. I usually use Norman Rockwell paintings because they tell such wonderful stories in them. Try it. Pick one or two and write about them. How about the one of the kid waiting outside the dentist office? I have gotten hilarious stories about that one.
Keep writing short pieces until you come up with something that cries out to become a longer piece. Then you will need a good outline, a lot of character studies and analysis and all necessary research before you are ready to start writing.
I always recommend a novel called The Novelist. In it, a famous novelist teaches a community college class in creative writing and actually writes a book for her class. During the story, the author actually goes through her whole writing process step by step. Very helpful. Often the way to bust out of a block is by changing the way you work. Give it a shot.
I dont tell people what to write about - I just suggest ways they can stop the block. The stories are buried in your head.

Move the block away and that is as easy as taking your finger and moving the block out of your line of vision.
I love reading Sci-fi., actually anything that is well written. Here's an idea...murder/suicide story. ...it happens when one mate has a terminal illness and the other mate can't see live without them.
What is happening in my area is the uranium miners are having problems with claim jumpers...an old west story in the year 2007.

This might not help you but I love true stories. They are so much more interesting than fiction to me. Can you think of a mundane event in your life that made you think differently about something? It might be a starting point for an adventure or background for a character.

Personally my favorite genre is Science Fiction. I'm not really sure what you are asking, but i like sci-fi because it takes me out of the world i am in and brings me to a place where things are how they could be if we cared to make them that way.
