If you are an "at will" employee / ie. without a contract, they sure can.

You also have the option to leave that job and find something more acceptable. That's the loss that they are willing to take, I guess.

if you are not doing the job expected to do or not working the way you are supposed to be then wages can be deducted other than being fired.
