Be careful, my fiance received one back in the summer and it was a scam(fortunately, he lost nothing, but he could have!). Most likely, if you have no idea why you would be receiving it, it's a scam.
And be careful, because a lot of banks are having a hard time telling if those checks are real or not, they seem very authentic.

The odds are this is a common scam. They send you a check and tell you to deposit it and after you deposit it send them a percentage of the amount. In a few days a large amount of money will be sent to you or deposited in your account.
Don't fall their scam. I have a Toll Bridge in New York City for sale. You'll make millions in Tolls.
Take the check to a Bank, any bank, and ask them to see if it is a valid check. By doing it this way you will not get arrested and charged with a crime for depositing a forged check.

Go to the bank that its signer uses. It will be somewhere on the check. Ask them to verify funds. They wont tell you anything about the account just if there is enough money in there to cover the check.

Are you sure it is a check? Some advertising is very deceptive.
You will be told very quickly whether or not it is valid by taking it to the nearest bank and try to cash it.
