I believe contemporary would be someone (artist, author, musician) who works in the present time. Not somebody from the 50's, not somebody who had died 100 years ago.
The top 10 hits on the radio for example would be contemporary music.

I like Blockhead and RJD2, they have been around for sometime but still seem to fly under most peoples radars. Just really chill music. Yeah mars volta, not like everyone hasn't heard of them.
