i have been icing it, keeping it in a splint, and stretching it as much as I can but it is still swollen I can't bend it or straighten it very much and it is painful when touched on the side of the knuckle. Should it still be hurting so much, should i just keep it splinted, or should I see a doctor?

When did this happen? It's difficult to give advise without knowing how long you've had the injury.
**** Ok, it sounds as though you need to be exercising it. A bruised bone is going to hurt for quite awhile. My husband did the same thing to his finger 10 days ago; it's still slightly bruised and swollen, but moving much better. What he did was take a tylenol or ibuprofen. Get a bowl of warm water, put your hand in it and start bending your finger slowly, up and down, a bit more each time you bend, as much as you can tolerate. If you can't bend it because it's stiff or you're afraid to move it, use your other hand to gently start bending the joint. You've kept it straight for 6 days, you need to get it moving.
If you think the swelling hasn't gone down at all, and if you truly cannot bend it at all using the pain med and warm water, you may want to get an x-ray. But if it doesn't look deformed, as in bent at a weird angle, and you are able to bend it a bit more each time you try, you can splint it when you're being very active, but continue to exercise it and let it heal.

Sounds like a torn ligament. Stop stretching it as this will be doing it more damage and go and see a doctor.
I tore a ligament in my big toe and kept playing..I tore it again and again until the scar tissue built up so much it can't bend anymore :P I hope you get better soon

Hehe. Yeah I want some of that too. Sometimes you'd think that the guy's leg had been pulled clean off, the way they writhe around on the ground. I have fallen down many times in my lifetime and never felt the urge to shriek, wail and roll around. Maybe it's the silly short pants and knee socks...
