they are the ghosts of dolphins, that is why you never see one in the aquariums.

in death the spirit of the dolphins gain insight into the evils men bring to the earth with there ships, cars, trains, and other polluting habits, that is why they try to draw the unnatural ships onto rocks and cause other events to sink the things destroying there environment

I think its both. I think there are humans who long to become mermaids, when they eventually succeed they gain fins and tail. Therefore they are humans with fins and tail. On the latter, when I mermaid longs to become human and eventually acheives it then they become mermaids with legs. You are what you are, so no matter what changes you make your core is still that of a human/mermaid. Of course the process of become either of these is so difficult that there are few who have ever accomplished it. That is why mermaids are still thought of as a myth than fact.

There was an actual mermaid fossil found in the Atlantic sea. It was about 2 ft long and it was said to be a baby. As far as us being mermaids with legs we would as least have something that looked like it evolved from gills. As far back from when mermaids were first discussed there is not enough time for us to have evolved from them. So I believe that mermaids are a completely other creature. Especially since the fossil was described and looks like a monster. A fish with a torso and arms and a head.

It's all pretty fishy to me. But for sure, humans with fins and tail I'm afraid. Just watch the Little Mermaid.

Hmmm.....I, too, am loathe to say that they don't exist, and I think that they are human females (a merman would be a male) with a tail and fins. However, evidence suggests that sailors who thought they were seeing mermaids in lagoons may have actually been spotting manatees which, in the unclear light, resembled females with fins. I say that these sailors were probably also drunk on too much rum.

I think they are real. but they are on another level of Earth. Just like Unicorns, fairies, and all of the magical creatures. I think it is like on the show Charmed. They have their own place. Mermaids are humans that have fins and a tail.

Well if you ask me, and I think you just did, there are both kinds. Lesser of the two legged mermaids, but still enough to be counted.
It all depends on who you ask I suppose.
Find your own conclusion to this one and just be happy with it. Ignore everyone else. ; . P

she asked a question not if they existed!
but i do strongly suspect that we are merpeople with legs for can't we swim on the other hand merpeople could be humans with a tail for they must of gotten addicted to water early on in the stage of evolution hundreds of thousands years ago
