I have a list of some 16 schools that interest me. I know that is too many to apply to (is it?) and I need to narrow down my list? How do I eliminate schools when so many colleges appeal to me? How many schools do I apply to?

In my opinion, 16 is not too much. But if you really want to eliminate some schools (which i dont recommend cuz you dont know which ones will accept you and you wont have as many choices) raise your standards. Get rid of the schools that doesnt have most or all of the things you are looking for in a school.

There isnt a rule that says that you have to apply to a certain number of schools and you cant go over. I think its ok to apply to all the ones that you want to go to because you wont know which ones will accept you.

It is going to be very expensive to apply to that many schools.

Most students apply to one or two "safety" schools (to which they are sure they can easilly gain admission), two or three "match" schools (which reflect prior admission of students with similar statistics), and two or three "reach" schools (which will be a stretch for the student to gain admission).

Go to http://www.collegeboard.com or http://www.princetonreview.com and use their "College Matchmaker" functions to see which schools seem to be a match for your particular stats, and your preferences in terms of size, location, available majors, cost, etc.

If you are applying mostly to very elite, highly selective colleges, 16 might not be too high a number, since admission is so very difficult to achieve. However, if you are applying to a range of schools, 7 or 8 should be plenty.

Best wishes to you!

consider your major, living situation, finances, people, the school's fame in major, and most importantly VISIT the ones you're most likely to apply to and see if it feels right and comfortable...you'll just kno which ones you want to go to
