and is it just the tv thats talking?

I think they're checking for schizophrenia - a very serious mental illness. Some people with it 'hear' voices that tell them to kill other people.

People with some phsychological disorders believe that people on the TV are communicating directly to them, that songs on the radio are written for them, or are specifically giving them coded messages, and similar delusions.

Seems a bit ham-fisted to ask it straight out, but perhaps people with such delusions freely answer "yes."

it is a classic symptom of schitzophrenia, absolutely. I had a friend who thought he could manipulate what the people on tv did, and who thought they were conspiring against him etc. delusions of grandeur is a dead giveaway. Unfortunately he died, it is a very very serious illness. If you are a pot smoker I suggest you stop immediately if you are having any of these symptoms but don't want to tell the Dr.

Just to assess if you have any mental illness such as schizophrenia. Some ask this as a standard part of their assessment. If you think it's an odd question, you probably have nothing to be concerned about.
