I don't know anything about genetics. What are the odds of parents who have brown hair and brown eyes and have no red haired ancestors for several generations (that they know of) to have a baby with firey red hair and gray eyes? Would anyone have an idea? Because my husband and I are stumped.

Why -- is this what happened to you?

My neice has BLUE eyes and RED hair, but her parents both have brown hair and brown eyes. It is weird, but his ancestors are Irish, so that is the only way we can explain it. :)

Sometimes the recessive traits show at the early ages, but recede as they get older. As a result, the genetic trait for the red hair may not show, even though they are still carrying the red hair gene. You're child will probably grow older, and the red hair will turn to another color. (Brown) Same with the gray eyes. I'm no geneticist, but I think this is the most likely "solution."
