I've just purchased a pair of used ice skates to eventually be used for me to start playing ice hockey. When I bought them they were heated to fit my feet and it seemed as thought they fit perfectly. However, now one of the skates pushes a bit on my big toe and I would guess it's about 1/2 size too small. Since it seems better to have snug fitting skates is there a way to make my one skate a bit larger? I am hoping to avoid having to buy a new pair and spend considerably more money...especially since I am just learning the game. Any advice?

I read an article on epinions.com about buying hockey skates (Ice Hockey Skate Buying Demystified). The writer, puckmugger, states that it's much better to have skates that are too small than too big. Most hockey shops have the ability to stretch or expand an area of the skate by "punching" it in that area. So, take them into a local hockey shop and see what they can do for you.

Forgive my limited knowledge (it's been a while) but 1/2 size doesn't seem like a big deal, FAR better too small then too big.

However, I had the same problem as you (and shouldn't have done this -- fair warning!) and gave the skates back to the little shop I bought them. The owner contacted somebody (shoemaker??) who "stretched them hydraulically" at no extra charge to me.

If you bought them used I guess you don't have that option but I'd still check with your local hockey shop.

If you remember Wayne Gretzky, he wore his skates at least a size to small. I heard from someone that it makes you skate faster.. i believe because you want the game to go faster and the pain to go away. But if your a real hockey player, deal with it. Your tough if you play
