I'm wondering if its illegal to use a little part of a song in a video? I don't own the copyrights.

And I was also wondering how much does it cost to buy the copyrights of ONE song only?

I'm wondering if its illegal to use a little part of a song in a video? I don't own the copyrights.

And I was also wondering how much does it cost to buy the copyrights of a song from The Sounds? Are they really popular?

So , if I get sued how much will I have to pay? And also I used the video in a Short video competition in a Brazilian website and If i win i get a Home Theatre and a DVD and now i'm at the top 5. So , i'm not sure If i want to win anymore. And I used the song "Tony The Beat" from the Sounds , I hope they don't sue me cause I love them.

you don't need the complete and exclusive rights to the song, just permission to use it in the video. this is called a sync right, and most composers have Harry Fox Agency handle these with simple pre-arranged contract terms. check out HarryFox.com for further info.

First, you probably can't buy the copyrights to a song. That would entitle you to all royalties and distribution rights. The composer would have to be pretty desperate to sell his/her rights to the song.

Generally, you may not use the work of another without their express permission. There is, however, a provision for "fair use." This is ill defined but means you could quote from the chorus, or a single verse without paying. You would not be able to use the whole performance without obtaining a license to do so.

Broadcast Music, Inc. is the US watchdog organization and would be a good place to start checking to see if your intended use violates any copyright and how to get permissions.

Yes, it's illegal, but if you're just posting on youtube or something probably no one's going to care, and I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Buying the copyright to one song varies with band popularity: to use Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love" is going to cost ten grand. To use a Beatles song, astronomically more. To use a song from a tiny local band on a tiny indie label, maybe a couple hundred bucks.
